Vol. 195 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increases in Pensions.

3.

asked the Minister for Finance the approximate number of retired civil servants, Army personnel, Gardaí, teachers, and other officials who will benefit by the proposed pensions increases announced in the Budget, specifying the number in each category.

The number of Exchequer pensions in the various categories which will benefit from the pensions increases announced in the Budget is approximately as follows:

Civil Service

1,750

Gardaí

2,250

National Teachers

2,200

Pensions under the Military Service and Army Pensions Acts and Defence Forces Pensions Schemes

22,500

Total

28,700

Pensioners of local authorities will also benefit. The number of beneficiaries in this category is estimated at approximately 2,100. It is, however, not possible to give a definite figure as it would take some time to obtain particulars from the large number of local authorities concerned.

4.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of the proposed pensions increases, percentage or actual, applicable to civil servants, Army personnel, Gardaí and teachers, as announced in the Budget; and also the total amount which it is anticipated that the increases will cost during the current year.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance the percentage increases it is proposed to grant to old-IRA pensioners under the Budget proposals.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 4 and 5 together.

An additional Estimate will be taken this session to authorise the payment, as from 1st August 1962, of the pensions increases announced in the Budget. The various Departments concerned are at present preparing figures of cost for the purposes of the Estimate. Until this work is completed it will not be possible to give information of the kind requested by the Deputy. Present indications are, however, that the £450,000 provided in the Budget will be sufficient to meet the total cost.
