Vol. 195 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Éireann Reference to Cardinal Stepinac.

52.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has received complaints about a reference to the late Cardinal Stepinac in a news talk from Radio Éireann on the 10th April 1962; and if he will cause an inquiry to be made into the actual terms of the reference.

The only complaint I received regarding this news talk which was in Irish, was written almost a month after the talk was broadcast and was based on a letter which appeared in an evening newspaper on Monday 7th May, 1962. All the newspapers which published the letter subsequently published statements which included a translation of the only reference in the broadcast to Cardinal Stepinac. I understand from Radio Éireann that this is an accurate translation of the passage in the script, so that no further inquiry in that regard seems called for.

Is the Minister aware that the newspapers that published the translation also published an apology for so publishing, as it was slanderous?

I am aware that one newspaper apologised. Maybe all of them did but I do not know.

The Minister is not aware that all of them did——

No, I am not.

——and that this is, either wittingly or unwittingly, another attempt sponsored by the same individual to discredit a reputable lecturer and it is using Dáil Éireann to forward an individual attack.
