A service devoted to survey and mapping is inseparable from an organisation such as the Department of Lands which engages in the inspection, acquisition and allotment of landed properties throughout the country. The work done during the financial year 1961/62 may be summarised as follows:
On the Land Commission side, 1,864 copy maps were prepared and 483 maps, which accompanied inspectorate reports, were checked against Land Registry records and certified; 760 Resale Schemes were checked as to mapping detail and some 1,350 requisitions of a miscellaneous nature were dealt with. Boundary Surveys were carried out on 19 tenanted estates and face bank surveys on 13 bogs, apart from minor surveys on 26 other estates. Undefined boundaries were lockspitted on 61 estates as well as the definition, at the request of Forestry Division, of boundaries on 20 mountain holdings.
On the Forestry side, a road layout was surveyed to meet the programme of 200 miles of completed forest road. In addition, other survey work, not quantitively measurable, was undertaken, including access difficulties, rights-of-way, checking of boundaries, etc. Folio particulars were extracted and maps prepared in respect of some 1,200 properties on offer to Forestry Division, while deeds and record maps were prepared in about 500 cases. Planted areas aggregating approximately 25,000 acres were mapped. There were also various other mapping duties, too numerous to classify, arising out of the management of the Forest Estate.
It is anticipated that the nature and extent of the work-programme for the year 1962-63 will be of a similar order to that for 1961-62.
