Vol. 196 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois Turf Haulage Facilities.

22.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that Bord na Móna removed a bridge leading to the turf banks at Clonadacasey on the main bog road leading from the main Mountrath-Portlaoise road near the Oak national school and known as the road to the turf banks at Clondoughlas; if in view of the fact that the many local turf-cutters are unable to transport their turf from this bog because of the failure of Bord na Móna to replace this bridge he proposes to take action to ensure that a bridge will be immediately erected; and whether an officer of his Department will call immediately to Mr. Thomas Cunningham, Clonadacasey, Mountrath, County Laois, who will point out this urgent work on behalf of the many local turf-cutters.

I am not aware that Bord na Móna removed the bridge. I understand, however, that a bridge needs to be reconstructed on the bog road referred to and, in the interests of the turf cutters concerned, I had previously arranged to have a report furnished on it.

I hope to reach a decision on the matter at an early date.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that in the next week or ten days there will be turf on this bog ready to be drawn home and that the cutters cannot possibly get it out of the bog without a bridge? Would he make up his mind within the next week on this matter so that the cutters will be enabled to draw their turf home?
