Vol. 196 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Persons at Work.

5.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give an approximate breakdown of the figure of 710,000 given in Table 16 of Economic Statistics 1962 as the number of persons at work in non-agricultural economic activities in 1961, distinguishing between employees, own account workers and others.

The latest date for which basic data of the type requested by the Deputy are at present available is 1951. In view of the lapse of time since then, and of the very inadequate nature of the information on changes in the numbers at work in some of the categories specified, it is considered that a reliable sub-division of the total at work in non-agricultural activities in 1961 cannot be made until the relevant material from the Census of Population taken in that year becomes available.

6.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give an approximate breakdown of the figure of 409,000 given in Table 7 of Economic Statistics 1962 as the number of persons at work in agriculture, forestry and fishing in 1961, distinguishing between farmers, relatives assisting on farms, employees and others.

It is estimated that the total in question was made up of 342,000 farmers and relatives assisting and 67,000 employees (including apprentices, managers etc.). It is not possible to make separate estimates of the numbers of farmers and of relatives assisting.
