Vol. 196 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Automatic Weapons.

66.

asked the Minister for Defence how many battalions of the Army, with the exception of the units at present in the Congo, are armed with fully-automatic small arms, and the number of battalions not so armed.

Fully automatic small arms, in substantial quantities, form part of the equipment of every battalion of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

I asked the Minister if he would tell me how many battalions, apart from the units in the Congo, are fully armed with automatic weapons?

Every battalion in the Forces is supplied with these automatic weapons.

How many men in each battalion are supplied with them?

I cannot answer that particular question.

I am suggesting that there are only sufficient automatic weapons in each battalion to mount a guard.
