Vol. 196 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Boys and Girls at School and in Occupations.

6.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) how many out of a group of 1,000 boys and girls now aged 14 years will be living in the State at each subsequent birthday up to the age of 20, assuming mortality and emigration rates equal to those in the period 1956 to 1961 (or, if figures for this period are not available, 1951 to 1956); and (b) the number of those at (a) who are (i) at schools or college (ii) gainfully occupied and (iii) engaged in home duties or otherwise not gainfully occupied.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the estimated numbers out of 1,000 boys and 1,000 girls now aged 14 years who will be living in the State at each subsequent birthday up to age 20, assuming mortality and emigration rates equal to those in the period 1951-56. The other information requested by the Deputy cannot be compiled until data on occupations by ages are available from the 1961 Census of Population.

Following is the statement:

ESTIMATED number each of 1,000 boys and 1,000 girls now aged 14 years who will be living in the State at each subsequent birthday up to age 20 years.

asked the Taoiseach the estimated numbers entering gainful occupations (distinguishing between agricultural and other occupations) for the first time during each year of age from 14 to 19, assuming conditions of emigration and mortality similar to those of 1956 to 1961 (or 1951 to 1956).

The latest available data on the subject of the Deputy's question, which relates to 1951, based on the 1946 to 1951 experience, are shown on page 150 of the General Report of the 1946 and 1951 Censuses of Population. More up-to-date figures cannot be prepared until the relevant information relating to occupations classified by ages becomes available from the 1961 Census of Population.
