Vol. 196 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Restoration of Museum Exhibits.

79.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that many of the exhibits in the 1916 section of the Museum are badly faded; and if he will have steps taken to restore them and to prevent further fading or deterioration of the exhibits.

Some of the items in the 1916 Collection were in a faded condition before they were acquired by the National Museum. It was, however, observed that some fading also occurred during the special 1916 Twenty-fifth Anniversary Exhibition when the Collection was displayed in the central court of the Museum, then roofed with plain glass.

In consequence the following steps were then taken to prevent further fading or deterioration:— (1) the collection was transferred to its present location where daylight is excluded and artificial illumination provided; (2) the Roll of Honour has been installed in a cabinet with sliding panels to minimise exposure to light; and (3) the plain glass in the roof of the central court has been replaced by insulated glass.
