Vol. 196 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Suir Obstructions.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that certain obstructions have accumulated in the River Suir between Thurles and Holycross; if he will take steps to have them removed; and, failing this, if he will permit Tipperary (NR) County Council to remove these obstructions in order to avert a recurrence of serious flooding in this area.

As the Deputy is aware, a survey of the River Suir and its tributaries is in hands with a view to the preparation of a comprehensive drainage scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. Pending the preparation and confirmation of such a scheme the Commissioners of Public Works cannot undertake any works on the river. It is not necessary for the county council to obtain the permission of the Commissioners for the removal of obstructions in the river.
