Vol. 196 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of County Roscommon Rivers.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he advised the Roscommon County Council to submit proposals for the drainage of the Lung and the Feorish Rivers to the Office of Public Works.

I did not advise the county council to submit their drainage proposals for these rivers to the Office of Public Works. In the case of the Feorish River, I informed the council that, if adequate benefits were to accrue from further work on this river, a more comprehensive scheme than that submitted by the council would be necessary. Such a scheme would require for its execution an experienced and specialised organisation, with the necessary plant and machinery, and I asked the council to consider whether their staff would be in a position to undertake it. In reply, the council forwarded a report from the acting county engineer recommending that the Office of Public Works should be asked to execute the scheme. The council approved of this report. In the case of the Lung River, the county council, on the advice of their engineering staff, requested my Department to submit their drainage proposals to the Office of Public Works.
