Vol. 196 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Traffic Lanes on Dublin-Swords Road.

29.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government the reasons why the Dublin County Council ceased to mark four traffic lanes on the Dublin-Swords road from Santry past the Airport junction; and if having regard to the increasing volume of traffic carried on that road he will take steps to have four traffic lanes marked on it without delay.

Under Section 95 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 the road authority concerned provides traffic signs, which expression includes roadway markings, with the consent, or at the request, of the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána. My functions relate to prescribing the size, shape, colour, significance, etc. of the signs and markings. I understand that traffic lane marking on the road in question was discontinued because of confusion arising from the varying widths of different sections of the road.

Does the Minister not think that it would be desirable to urge local authorities to mark traffic lanes on all their new roads when they are constructing them?

It is a matter to which I can give consideration.
