Vol. 196 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limit for Income Tax Relief.

2.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will raise the income limit for income tax relief for persons over the age of 65 years from £600 a year to £800 a year.

My proposals for the current year are contained in the Finance Bill and the Deputy will appreciate that I cannot indicate in advance what future financial measures may or may not provide.

Is the Minister aware that because of the continued drop in the value of money, many old persons are suffering hardship by reason of the present upper limit of £600 per year? Would the Minister consider sympathetically raising the limit to £800? Can the Minister say what that would cost?

I could not give the Deputy that information at the moment.
