Vol. 196 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishery Protection Patrols.

45.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of occasions between the 1st June 1961 and the 30th June 1962 on which the fishery protection corvettes carried out patrol duty between Galway and Killybegs, specifying the names of the corvettes involved and the results obtained.

During the periods referred to in the Deputy's question eight fishery protection patrols were carried out in the area between Galway and Killybegs, three by L.E. "Macha" and five by L.E. "Cliona"

As a result of these patrols, two foreign vessels were boarded by personnel of the corvettes. One of these vessels was warned of its proximity to the limit of territorial waters. The other was boarded on two separate occasions but on neither occasion was there evidence of illegal fishing. On the second occasion on which the vessel was boarded it was anchored in Blacksod Bay and was told to leave territorial waters.
