Vol. 197 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reformatory and Industrial Schools.

139.

asked the Minister for Education if in future annual reports of his Department he will delete the descriptive terms "under detention" and "disposal of children" in Appendix V, Reformatory and Industrial Schools, Tables A, B and D, in view of (a) the objectionable connotations of such terms and (b) the fact that only 736 of the 3,805 persons in such schools were committed as youthful offenders.

The phrase "under detention" has been in use for very many years to distinguish between the children who have been committed by court order to these schools and those placed there privately or by the local health authorities.

I agree, however, that nowadays some more suitable phraseology would be desirable. I shall arrange accordingly.
