58.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of new houses required to be built in Gorey, County Wexford; and what plans there are at present for future building.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 55 to 58 together.

It is a matter for each local authority to assess from time to time the number of new dwellings required to be provided in their area under the Housing of the Working Classes and the Labourers Acts. Figures so assessed are not usually furnished to my Department except in conjunction with housing proposals. I am not accordingly in a position to give the information sought in reply to the first part of each question.

With regard to plans for future building, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his question of 20th June, 1962, since which, the erection of four further houses at John Street, Wexford, has been approved. No further building proposals have been submitted for the other towns mentioned by the Deputy.

The present position regarding the remaining schemes is as follows:

Wexford U.D. The 34-house scheme at John Street is in progress. A 24-house scheme has been approved for Davitt Road, North, and a scheme of about 120 houses at Slippery Green has been generally approved.

Enniscorthy U.D. A proposal for the acceptance of a tender for a 28-house scheme at Bellefield is awaited.

New Ross U.D. Proposals for the acceptance of tenders for schemes of 20 houses at Charleton Hill, 4 houses at William Street and 2 houses at Windmill Lane are awaited.

Gorey. The housing authority's observations on technical questions raised in respect of a 14-house scheme are awaited.

Would the Minister say whether or not the information sought in the first part of each of these four Questions would be contained in the recent survey that he required or directed local authorities to carry out?

I have the surveys here. I raised that point myself, but I was persuaded by my officials that it was not the information in the surveys in which the Deputy was interested but information as to housing needs and the applications in regard to them.

Would the Minister be kind enough to let me have that information?

I will send it to the Deputy.

If it is not very long I should prefer the Minister to read it out in order to have it on the records.

I am sure the House, with the Ceann Comhairle's authority, will convenience the Minister by allowing the information in these surveys to be inserted in the record.

If they are inserted in the record, that will be all right. This is a matter of principle.

Very well.
