Vol. 197 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Glendalough Burial Grounds.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has received a communication from the Wicklow County Council requesting a time limit on the recent preservation order which he has made in connection with the proposed new burial ground at Glendalough, County Wicklow; and, if so, whether he is prepared to agree to the County Council's request.

The Wicklow County Council have been informed that this site is of sufficient national, historical and archaeological importance to require its being retained and preserved permanently as a national monument and that the preservation order is not subject to a time limit.

In view of the fact that we are only seeking an extension of an existing burial ground on this piece of ground, does the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that the request of the county council was a reasonable one?

No; I do not agree with the suggestion of the Deputy because this site forms part of the ancient monastic settlement of Glendalough which is one of the most important in the country.

So does the original burial ground.

I think there is plenty of land in which to bury people in Wicklow without taking this site.
