The following are the definitions:

Acute beds include beds for general medicine and surgery, infectious diseases (including tuberculosis) and beds in special hospitals and units for orthopaedic, paediatric, cancer, ophthalmic, ear, nose and throat and other specialised treatment.

Maternity beds include such beds in general and maternity hospitals and in maternity homes.

Psychiatric beds include all beds in district mental hospitals and in private mental hospitals.

Geriatric beds include all such beds in county homes and in homes for the aged.

Other beds include those in institutions for the mentally handicapped and in convalescent homes, nursing homes, children's homes and homes for incurables.

The figures given were compiled from bed statistics related to the year 1960 and the population as returned at the 1961 census.
