Vol. 198 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mining Regulations.

84.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce at what date the proposed legislation codifying and extending the existing mining regulations in the State, which are currently being drafted in the Mines Inspection Section of his Department, will be placed before the Dáil; and whether, in the preparation of such legislation, steps will be taken to bring the mining regulations in this country into line with those obtaining in Britain and abroad in the matter of safety of miners and conditions of work in mines.

The preparation of legislation for the purpose of codifying and extending the existing law relating to mines is proceeding in my Department. Good progress has been made but I am not yet in a position to say when the Bill will be introduced.

It is intended that the new legislation will contain provisions relating to safety and conditions of employment which will be in line with modern conditions and developments.
