Vol. 198 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prisoners' Christmas Cards.

59.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that prisoners are denied the privilege of sending Christmas cards to their close relations; and if he will take steps to remedy the situation.

The prison rules provide that, at the Governors' discretion, prisoners under sentence may be allowed to write a special letter for Christmas to relatives or friends.

I have already approved of a proposal that the prisons governors may exercise their discretion beneficially in this respect.

As regards prisoners on remand or for trial, there is no restriction on their communications.

May I take it that Christmas cards are available to these prisoners?

I do not understand what the Deputy means by available.

Can they purchase them?

That is a separate question.

I wish to give notice that I should like to raise the subject matter of Question No. 19 on the Adjournment.

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.

Can there be an Adjournment Debate on the Adjournment Debate?
