Vol. 198 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Assigned Pensions.

4.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate the basis on which, for the purpose of the civil servants' pensions increases for 1962, he has calculated the increase in the case of a civil servant who made a surrender under the Superannuation Act, 1956, in return for the grant of a pension after his death to a nominated beneficiary; and if he has received any representations on the matter.

Where a civil servant who retired before 15th December, 1959, surrendered-part of his pension under the Superannuation Act, 1956, to provide a pension for a wife or other dependant the net pensions payable by virtue of such surrender are separately increased by 6 per cent.

If the civil servant provided a pension for his wife and elected that her pension should be payable, like his own pension from the date of his retirement, both pensions were increased by 6 per cent. if they were still in course of payment on 1st August, 1962. Where only one pension is payable at any time, for the reason that the pension payable to the wife or other beneficiary does not commence until the death of the pensioner, the pension which was actually in course of payment on 1st August, 1962, was increased by 6 per cent. In this case, if the pension increased on 1st August, 1962, is the civil servant's own pension, any beneficiary's pension which becomes payable on the death of the pensioner will be increased by 6 per cent. as from the date on which it becomes payable. Apart from a few applications for payment of the 6 per cent. increase on pensions payable to the wives of retired civil servants with effect from the date of the husband's retirement, I have not received any representations in the matter.
