Vol. 199 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Leitrim Mineral Deposits.

16.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will arrange to have a survey carried out in north Leitrim to ascertain what mineral wealth is there, in view of the great need to have an industry started in the area to offset the redundancy caused by the closing of the railway line some years ago, and particularly in view of the fact that, in the Glenfarne area, there is a type of clay which is very suitable for the manufacture of glazed pipes and other clay products.

North Leitrim has already been surveyed on several occasions, and the results of these surveys are available for inspection by interested persons at the Office of the Geological Survey.

I have granted a number of prospecting licences recently in respect of areas in north Leitrim and I will be prepared to grant further licences to any person who satisfies the customary conditions as to financial and technical resources.
