Vol. 199 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Pension Increases.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of each Department the number of retired officers who have not yet received the increase in pensions due to them with effect as from August, 1962; and when the increases will be paid to all officers in each such Department.

The increases in pensions, payable from 1st August, 1962, under the authority of the additional Estimate passed by this House last July are, like the increases granted under the Pensions (Increase) Acts, of 1950, 1956, 1959 and 1960, granted by the various Ministers in charge of the Departments from whose Votes the original pensions are paid. Increases in the pensions paid by my Department from the Vote for Superannuation and Retired Allowances have been paid in all except about 100 cases where there are difficulties in determining the exact amount of the appropriate increases. These cases are being disposed of at present. Advances on foot of the increases have meanwhile been paid to the pensioners concerned.

The preparation of a statement showing the Departments in which these pensioners served before retirement would necessitate an expenditure of staff time which would not be warranted.

Will the Minister indicate approximately how many persons are concerned in the cases not yet cleared?

About 100.

Can the Minister say when it is anticipated that they will be cleared?

I think it is only a matter of a few weeks anyway. They are being paid on account all the time.

Have the Departments concerned indicated to those affected whether they are entitled to get some money on account?

They are getting it on account.

Do they know?

They have been told it is on account.
