Vol. 199 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána: Competency in European Languages.

42.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the wider contacts with European countries that will accrue, should Ireland join the EEC, he is satisfied that he has personnel within the Garda Síochána force who are competent to speak European languages.

I am satisfied that no serious inconvenience is likely to arise in this respect in the foreseeable future. I may add that, like any other section of the community, I should like to see as many members of the Force as possible competent in European languages.

Is the Minister providing incentives to the Force to make themselves competent?

Not specifically.

Would he not consider doing so?

I do not think it necessary at this stage.
