Vol. 199 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Employment.

4.

asked the Taoiseach the total numbers employed in industries which are at present protected by (a) tariffs and (b) quota restrictions.

The exact particulars requested by the Deputy are not available since protection by tariff or by quota relates to an individual product and not to an industry, while industrial employment statistics relate to industries and not to products. Under such circumstances any computation must be of a tentative nature. It is estimated that in the case of establishments in transportable goods industries covered by the Census of Industrial Production 149,000 people were engaged in September 1962 in industries any of whose products would, in the case of importation, be subject to a customs tariff (whether designed for protective purposes or not) and/or a quota.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say whether these figures are calculated on the same basis as those in the census of production or on the same basis as those contained in the Economics Statistics booklet?

I think the Deputy should assume they are on the census of production calculation.

The Census of Industrial Production.

I had better put down a question next week to get that information.

It is not possible to get the information in the form in which it is required.

The Taoiseach says he assumes it is on the basis of the census of production.

That is what is stated in the reply.

I did not hear the first part of it.
