Vol. 199 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Grant-Aided Industries.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of persons employed year by year from 1952 to 1962 in industries established, or extended, with the aid of grants made under the Undeveloped Areas Acts, 1952 to 1957.

16.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of persons employed year by year from 1956 to 1962 in industries established, or extended, with the aid of grants made under the Industrial Grants Acts, 1956 to 1959.

I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle to take Questions Nos. 15 and 16 together.

There is invariably an interval between the date of approval of an industrial grant and the date on which the industry gets into full production. For this reason, employment figures for grant-assisted industries in the undeveloped areas are available only from 1955 and, in the case of industries established elsewhere, from 1960.

Employment figures for grant-assisted industries in the undeveloped areas from 1955 to 1961 are as follows:—

1955

828

1956

872

1957

1,143

1958

1,470

1959

2,225 (estimated)

1960

2,935

1961

3,306

The employment provided in grant-assisted industries established outside the undeveloped areas was 704 in 1960 and 1,253 in 1961.

It will, of course, be appreciated that there are a number of firms in whose case a grant has been approved but which either have not yet commenced production or are in production on a limited scale only.
