Vol. 199 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Estate Herd.

27.

asked the Minister for Lands why John McLoughlin, Newtown, Enfield, County Kildare, was dismissed from the post of part-time herd on the Nash Estates Ltd. at Cappagh, Enfield, since he had given every satisfaction to the inspectors.

The person referred to has been employed as herd on this 342 acre estate on a temporary part-time basis for the past year. He has secured full time employment on building construction work, leaving him inadequate time for the herding duties. The part-time employment has been terminated in accordance with his written agreement.

Did he not inform the officials of the Land Commission when he was first taken on that he was in full-time employment?

It is a question of this man carrying out his duties effectively. The Land Commission take the view that it is not compatible that he should be whole-time employed on building construction work and that, at the same time, he should be part-time employed on herding. He is employed on building construction work at the moment.

Was there any complaint made against him over a period?

No. The matter came to the notice of the Land Commission in the ordinary course of administration. They felt that this was not effective administration in regard to this estate.

Assuming that some complaint was made, did it come from his former employer who had 76 acres of land taken and had only 24 head of cattle on this land from June until October of this year? He was asked to do more work than his terms of appointment required. That was why the complaint came.

There was no question of complaints. It was merely that they took the view that a whole-time employee on building construction work was not the proper person to be employed on herding duties.
