Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Doctors and Dentists in Practice.

16.

asked the Minister for Health the number of dentists normally engaged in active dental practice in the State, and the number employed full-time by health authorities.

While I have not precise information as to the number of dentists who are engaged in active dental practice in the State, from inquiries which I have caused to be made, it appears that the number is approximately 600.

The number of dentists employed full-time by health authorities is 87.

17.

asked the Minister for Health the number of medical practitioners normally engaged in active medical practice in the State, and the number employed full-time by health authorities.

The number of doctors employed full-time by health authorities in the State is now 569. When I replied to a similar question by the Deputy on 16th July, 1958, the figure was 430.

In the reply mentioned, I explained that I had not precise information as to the number of medical practitioners normally engaged in active medical practice. That is still the position and no more up-to-date figure than the qualified one, 2,921, which I gave the Deputy on that occasion, based on the 1951 Census of Population, has become available in the meantime.
