Vol. 199 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Clearing Services.

30.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will set up a national service to clear roads of snow and ice, and provide the service with the best modern snow ploughs and sand and salt spreading vehicles, or financially assist local authorities in the purchase of such equipment.

I am not satisfied that a national service on the basis suggested would be the best arrangement to meet all circumstances. The local road authorities are in the best position to deal with exceptional road conditions in their areas. I am prepared to consider proposals from these authorities for the raising of loans to finance the purchase of equipment, whether of a kind specially designed to deal with snow and ice or of road making machinery suitable for use in such conditions. In so far as equipment is used to deal with snow or ice on main roads, one-half the cost of such operations, including charges arising out of the purchase of equipment, will rank for recoupment from the Road Fund.

31.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if his attention has been drawn to a report that the British Ministry of Transport have introduced a new type of salt spreading vehicle to prevent ice-formation on roads, which will reduce the cost of combating bad road conditions; and if he will have the new equipment made available in this country without delay.

I have seen the report in question and I am having inquiries made about the machine.
