Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of New Ross Bridge.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the dangerous condition of the bridge connecting New Ross, County Wexford, with County Waterford; when the condition of this bridge was brought to the notice of his Department and the local authority concerned; if any proposals for either the reconstruction or the replacement of the present bridge have been put forward by the local authority; and, if so, if any decision has been come to by his Department.

I am aware that New Ross bridge has been subject to weight and speed restrictions since 1940. In April, 1960, Wexford County Council, in consultation with Kilkenny County Council with whom they share responsibility for the bridge, applied under Part IV of the Local Government Act, 1946, for a Bridge Order to enable them to construct a new bridge. The application is being dealt with in accordance with the prescribed statutory procedure and a local inquiry has been held. I hope to be in a position to convey a decision on the application in the near future.
