Vol. 199 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Schools Meals Service.

29.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his attention has been drawn to the plans of the Department of Education to increase the length of the school day in primary schools; and whether, in conjunction with this lengthening of the school day, he will arrange that the school meals service be improved so as to provide a sit-down meal in place of the present sandwich meal, and that this meal should be provided free for necessitous children, and at a moderate charge for other children.

I am aware that the question of a possible extension of the period of instruction in primary schools has been mooted. The provision of school meals is primarily a matter for the local authorities concerned and they will, no doubt, consider the matter in the light of any changes which may be made.
