Vol. 200 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Pension Increases.

17.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the delay in taking steps to provide for payment of increased pensions operative from 1st August, 1962, which were promised in the 1962 Budget, and the approximate amount unpaid up to date under various headings, which should have been paid in accordance with the Budget statement, and are still awaiting appropriate legislation.

The current pensions increases involved a greater volume of work than any previous pensions increase because it was necessary on this occasion to carry out a detailed recalculation of every pre-1955 pension. As I indicated in my reply to a question by the Deputy on the 22nd of November last the amount of increases unpaid cannot be known until the outstanding cases have been calculated and payment authorised. As regards the pensions payable from Votes with which my Department is concerned, however, payment of the increases has now been made in full in most cases. Advances have been issued in the balance of the cases and final authorisations are in course of preparation.
