Vol. 200 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers - Temporary Assistance Officers.

43.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of temporary assistance officers employed by the Dublin Health Authority, and details of their duties and remuneration.

There are ten temporary assistance officers in the employment of the Dublin Health Authority at present. They are remunerated at the rate of £550 per annum. The duties of an assistance officer are set out in Article 59 of the Public Assistance (General Regulations) Order, 1942.

44.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why temporary assistance officers employed by the Dublin Health Authority since 1st October 1949 have not received an increase of £15 per annum for each year of continuous service, having regard to the fact that he sanctioned such increases in March 1950.

I presume the Deputy is referring to temporary assistance officers appointed since 1949. None of the temporary officers who were serving in 1949 is at present employed in that capacity. The longest serving temporary assistance officers in the employment of the Dublin Health Authority were appointed in 1955. These officers were appointed by the Dublin Board of Assistance to act as assistance officers, or inquiry officers for the purposes of the Health Acts, as the need arose. They were not engaged on an incremental scale of salary but on a fixed rate of remuneration and consequently they are not entitled to an increase in respect of each year of service.
