Vol. 200 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Usage of Irish Wheat.

25.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if a higher inclusion of native wheat in the grist next cereal year could not have resulted in there being no necessity for a reduction in the estimated usage, with consequent reduction in price to the Irish farmer.

The most effective way of achieving what the Deputy appears to have in mind is to secure an increase in the consumption of flour and bread.

26.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the percentage of native wheat included in the grist over the last fifteen years, and the percentage on which the estimated usage of 265,000 tons for the next cereal year was based.

Over the past 15 years, there have been numerous fluctuations in the percentages of home-grown wheat included in bakers' and retail flour, depending on the quantity and quality of available supplies. The lowest average rate of user of home-grown wheat in any cereal year covered by the Deputy's Question was approximately 18 per cent. in the cereal year 1958-59 and the highest was approximately 76 per cent. in the cereal year 1957-58. The percentage on which the estimated user of 265,000 tons in the cereal year 1963-64 was based is 75.
