Vol. 201 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Loss of Wheat Samples.

22.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that a large number of wheat samples sent to the Central Laboratory on appeal have been lost; and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

My Department is not directly concerned in the operation of the Central Wheat Laboratory and I have received no representations regarding loss of samples as mentioned by the Deputy. Where a grower has legitimate cause for complaint arising from loss of a sample, I feel that he will be fairly met if the matter is taken up directly with the mill concerned.

If a grower has a legitimate complaint, will the Minister look after the matter for him by supplying some details?

I have no responsibility for the operation of the laboratory at all.

If the people who are charged with the responsibility disown responsibility, is that farmer to be forgotten?

The people who are responsible are the millers and representatives of the NFA.

But they will not accept responsibility in these cases. That is why I put down the question.

As Minister, I have no function in the activities of the laboratory. Surely, I cannot accept responsibility for a matter in which I have no function?

That is the fourth buck the Minister has passed in the past few minutes.

I have not got over the dirty milk you found in County Louth.

What is the Minister doing about it?
