Vol. 201 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Workmen's Compensation.

48.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will place a copy of the evidence, written and oral, taken by the Commission on Workmen's Compensation in the Library.

I am arranging for the preparation of copies of the evidence, written and oral, taken by the Commission on Workmen's Compensation and will have copies placed in the Library as soon as possible.

49.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if the ten per cent increase in the cost of the existing system of workmen's compensation to £2,391,000, mentioned in paragraph 490 of the reports of the Commission on Workmen's Compensation, includes (a) all the recommendations in the majority report, including paragraph 416, relating to disability benefit, estimated in paragraph 493 to cost £250,000, or (b) only the non-fatal cash benefit recommendations as explained in paragraph 371.

The increase to which the Deputy refers purports to cover the estimated cost of implementing all the recommendations in the majority report except those relating to—

(i) compulsory insurance (paragraph 395); (ii) medical and surgical treatment (paragraph 313); and (iii) payment of disability benefit under the Social Welfare Acts (paragraph 416).

50.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he has examined the estimated cost of the present system of compensation in the reports of the Commission on Workmen's Compensation amended as recommended in the majority report, with particular reference to paragraphs 371 and 490 of the majority report and paragraphs 4 and 5 of the minority report; and, if so, if he is in a position to offer any explanation for the remarkable differences in the respective estimates.

I have examined the respective estimates of the cost of the present system of workmen's compensation, amended as recommended in the majority report, but I am not in a position to offer any explanation for the differences in question.

The difference does exist.
