Vol. 202 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grand Canal Sewer.

52.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government whether Dublin Corporation have consulted with his Department regarding the use of the bed of the Grand Canal for laying a new sewer from Inchicore to Ringsend; if so, if he will state the nature of such consultations; and whether he will require that, should the bed of the canal be so used, the canal be maintained as a waterway.

In October, 1961, the City Manager notified my Department that the City Engineer had been considering the feasibility of laying main drainage pipes in the Grand Canal, in the event of its ceasing to be used as a waterway. As any such proposal would have a bearing on other major drainage projects in the South Dublin area, I suggested to the Corporation that discussions should be arranged between appropriate officers of the Corporation, the County Council and my Department in regard to the co-ordination of these proposals. As there are not yet any definite proposals on this matter, I cannot give an indication at this stage of what might be my attitude in relation thereto.

I want to ask the Minister for Industry and Commerce a supplementary question. Have I your permission, Sir?

Deputy Barry was on his feet for a long time.

I did not see him.

He was on his feet.

The Minister for Local Government was called.

I cannot go back on Questions.
