Vol. 202 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Remuneration of Rate Collectors.

26.

asked the Minister for Local Government (a) the names of local authorities which have submitted revised schemes of remuneration for their rate collectors, (b) the dates on which such schemes were submitted, (c) if a decision has yet been made on any of them, and (d) if not, when such a decision can be expected.

Proposed revised schemes of remuneration for their rate collectors were submitted as follows:

Cork County Council on

23rd February, 1963.

Kilkenny

,,,,

21st December, 1962.

Laois

,,,,

22nd April, 1963.

Meath

,,,,

14th December, 1962.

Monaghan

,,,,

19th March, 1963.

Waterford

,,,,

15th October, 1962.

Wicklow

,,,,

11th October, 1962.

A decision on the Cork proposal was issued on the 2nd April, 1963. The remaining proposals are being examined and decisions will be given as soon as possible.

Does that mean that the information given on Thursday last is incorrect, that the Minister is not waiting until all councils have applied before making a decision?

It is neither correct nor incorrect. What is of interest and concern in this matter is that, with the exception of the Cork application, all the others, so far to hand, deal with increases in remuneration following the increased agricultural grant. It is for that pattern we have been waiting, the volume of numbers to come indicating what pattern we will have to deal with. It does not follow that we have to wait for them all but it has been necessary to wait for a considerable number.

The Minister will agree it is important that, when a question is put down in this House, a correct answer should be given to it and not an evasive one such as was given in his absence last week?

I am afraid I cannot comment on that.
