Vol. 202 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leaving Certificate Mathematics Course.

43.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that, owing to the proposed introduction of the new leaving certificate mathematics course, there will be a considerable need and demand among teachers throughout the country for up-to-date refresher courses in mathematics; and that the course to be provided at University College, Dublin (a) does not cater for anything approaching a sufficient number of teachers, (b) is held at a date when many teachers are fully engaged in correcting State and other examination papers, and (c) must be paid for by the teachers themselves; and whether, in view of the fact that the need for these courses is so great, he will take immediate steps to arrange the provision of courses for large numbers at more suitable dates, such courses to be subsidised by his Department.

The matters referred to in the Deputy's question and other relevant maters will be fully considered when the observations of the various recognised school associations in relation to the proposed mathematics courses have been received in my Department.

It should not be inferred from this, however, that a considerable number of existing mathematics teachers are not already fully capable of teaching the new courses.
