Vol. 202 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin House Building.

33.

asked the Minister for Local Government how many houses have been built by private enterprise in the city and county of Dublin during the years 1960-61, 1961-62, and up to the present in 1962-63, the amount of money given in small dwellings acquisition loans, and the amount of grants given by his Department for houses of all kinds that are being built by private enterprise.

The statistics available in my Department relate only to grant aided houses erected by private enterprise. With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to give the information asked for by the Deputy in the form of a tabular statement which will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

Would the Minister consider annexing to the written reply to Deputy Burke's question a note showing the number of persons who are awaiting housing accommodation in the Dublin Corporation area and the qualifications requisite to secure housing accommodation at the present time?

It is nice to get help from the Leader of the Opposition as to how I should have put down the question. I am sure the Minister is aware that there are plenty of grants available for the building of new houses. In 1957, none was available. Labour and Fine Gael had not the price of a bag of cement.

The Deputy must have some north Dublin publicans in the Gallery.

No one was waiting for a house in 1957.

They had left the country.

300,000 left the country since then.
