Vol. 202 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Laois Estate.

12.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have decided to institute proceedings for the acquisition of the former Blake Estate at the Heath, Portlaoise, County Laois, for division among local applicants; and, if so, what is the present position in the matter.

The position regarding this estate is as set out in my reply to a question by Deputy Lalor on 28th March last, to which I would refer the Deputy.

Would the Minister state whether any promise was made to a deputation representative of the uneconomic holders and landless men in the area by the Land Commission that if the lands were not used for their original purpose—it was a stud farm —the Land Commission would acquire them for division among local people?

According to the information at my disposal, any such promise in these terms was not given to the deputation in question. No such promise was made.

Am I to understand, therefore, that the Land Commission do not propose to intervene further in this case?

That is not necessarily so. The matter will be under review. It will depend on the user of the lands.

When is a further review likely to take place?

I do not think I should state that.

Roughly. Within the next six months?

Within the next year or so.
