Vol. 202 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sales of Goods to Parents of Schoolgoing Children.

18.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the growing practice whereby commercial interests gain information of the names and addresses of children attending national schools for the purpose of calling upon their parents to push sales of a large variety of goods, ranging from photographs to encyclopaediae; and if he will have steps taken to stop this practice, and to prevent the exploitation of, and embarrassment to, children and parents in this manner.

I have no information in regard to the practice to which the Deputy refers. It would be a matter for the manager of the school concerned to take action in any such case where he is satisfied that the facts warrant it.
