Vol. 203 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Publication of Legal Diary.

97.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice if he will avail himself of the proposed termination of the existing arrangements for the publishing of the Legal Diary to introduce a new system of advising legal practitioners of the dates upon which actions will be heard; and if he will have a study made of such systems in other countries, with a view to devising a better system than the unsatisfactory one now in operation.

The inquiries which my Department, in consultation with the Incorporated Law Society was making with a view to continuing the publication of the Legal Diary have now reached an advanced stage, and I expect that publication by a new firm will commence with the issue of 12th June.

I do not accept that the present system of notifying dates of hearing is unsatisfactory, and have reason to think that it is, in fact, regarded as satisfactory by the general body of legal practitioners.

Would the Minister make certain that his colleague, the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs, delivers the Legal Diary when it is printed?

They are continually being delivered. What the Deputy suggests is not correct.
