Vol. 203 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if, in view of his statement on Thursday, 30th May, about the application of Ireland for membership of EEC, it is proposed to review the application in the near future, and, if so, when.

I think the Deputy may have misinterpreted the statement to which he refers. In that statement I indicated that it is our intention to reopen our application for membership of the European Economic Community at the earliest possible time. I went on to say "Whether it may be in two, three or four years there is virtual certainty that at some time before the end of this decade, membership of the European Economic Community will open for us, and we intend to acquire it." There has been no recent change in the position regarding our application.

I take it from the Taoiseach's reply it is not intended to renew our application before a decision is reached on the British application?

There is no question of renewal. Our application has not been withdrawn.

Would the Taoiseach clarify that? Is it not proposed to prosecute our application unless and until the British application is reopened or accepted or rejected?

The Deputy is well aware of our circumstances. I am sure if he gives it some thought, he will appreciate there is no advantage in closing the door to any possibility by a unilateral declaration at this time.

Has it been indicated to the EEC that we require our application to be deferred?

We have not communicated with the EEC regarding our application.

Is there a possibility that they may consider it?

I do not think so.

Can the Taoiseach say did the EEC inform us that they had deferred action?

I understand that they have deferred action on all the applications.
