Vol. 203 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Charges for Water Supply Connections.

51.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that a number of urban authorities are charging excessive amounts for a connection to the town water supply for people who live outside the town boundary; and if, in view of the fact that this practice is delaying the erection of houses in those areas, and is defeating the Department's schemes for having piped water supplies in as many houses as possible, he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not so aware. Charges for water in such cases are made at the discretion of the authority and are not subject to my sanction. If the Deputy will furnish details of the particular cases which he has in mind I will have inquiries made about them.

Will the Minister not agree that charges up to £20 per year, for water only, in excess of the normal charge is excessive?

As I said in my reply; "I am not so aware", and I do not propose to comment unless I get the details.

The Minister will get the details.
