Vol. 203 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Castlerea (Roscommon) Lands.

34.

Mr. Donnellan

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the lands of Thomas Burke, Greenlands, Kilsallagh, Castlerea, County Roscommon, are being privately offered for sale; and if, owing to the local congestion, the Land Commission will consider the propriety of acquiring the lands.

The Land Commission have no proceedings for acquisition of these lands which, I am informed, have recently been purchased by a local farmer.

Mr. Donnellan

Is the Minister aware that the man who has purchased these lands has quite a large farm himself? In view of that, would the Minister consider that the Land Commission should acquire these lands for distribution amongst the small tenants in that area?

My information is that the purchaser——

Mr. Donnellan

Who is he?

He is a Mr. Patrick Joyce. His valuation is £11 10s. and a valuation of £11 10s. is a small valuation, even in that part of County Roscommon. It was by public auction this was purchased.

So was the other one, but the Minister would not give the information.

That is not what the Deputy asked me. The Deputy asked me for the acreage.

Mr. Donnellan

I did not ask the Minister that question at all. He is acres wide of the target.
