Vol. 203 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Forestry Working Week.

42.

asked the Minister for Lands when he will grant forestry workers a five-day week, as all county council workers are now on a five-day week.

The introduction of a five-day week would not be practicable in the case of forestry workers.

May I ask why?

Unless there was going to be a reduction in output it would mean that they could not work the extra hours it would entail in the summertime because of the breach of the Conditions of Employment Act, for one thing, and the position is that they work during the daylight hours that are available in the wintertime at the moment, so that this could not be done without cutting down in output and without an interference with the earnings of the workers under the incentive bonus scheme.

The Minister should know that that is the height of bunkum.

The Deputy is an expert in that field.
