Vol. 203 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Removal of Bread Quota Restrictions.

20.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that bakery firms in the North of Ireland are preparing for an all-out onslaught on trade in counties near the border on the removal of quota restrictions on 1st July; if he will now, even at this late stage, reconsider the matter and reimpose the quota restrictions.

21.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the difficulties facing bakeries in the Border counties if the present quota restrictions on wheat and wheat products are removed on 1st July; and if he will consider postponing the arrangement for the present.

22.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that, if the present relaxation of quota restrictions is pursued, it is likely to have an adverse effect on the bakeries in County Donegal; and if he will consider the postponement of the date of the commencement of the relaxation, i.e. 1st July, 1963.

I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle to take Questions Nos. 20, 21 and 22 together.

In view of the exceptional considerations which apply in the case of wheaten products, the Government have decided that the restrictions on the importation of these products, including bread, should be retained.
