Vol. 203 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Binder and Baler Twine.

27.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the price of binder and baler twine has risen abnormally in recent weeks; if he can state the reason for this increase; and if, to prevent exploitation of the farming community, he will give favourable consideration to utilising the powers available to him to control the price of these commodities.

I am aware that the price of binder and baler twine, of Irish manufacture, for the 1963 season, shows a substantial increase on the 1962 price. I have had the matter examined and I am satisfied that this is due to the increased cost of imported sisal. I do not consider it necessary to take any further action in the matter.

Does the Minister not agree that more than £20 per ton is a very steep increase in the price of binding and baler twine in the one year?

There was a corresponding increase in the price of imported sisal.

More than 12½ per cent?
