Vol. 204 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Film Studios.

35.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has been informed of the closedown of Ardmore Studios, Bray, County Wicklow; and if he will make a statement on the situation, and the factors which have led to the apparent failure of this highly-publicised industry.

I understand that the present situation at Ardmore Studios has resulted from difficulties in obtaining business and that efforts are being made to secure further work for the studios.

There is no prospect of any lay-offs?

There was a lay-off following the completion of the last film Of Human Bondage. There is no business immediately in prospect, but there are hopes for some.

The Minister does not know what the immediate prospects are?

These have not been indicated to me.

Would the Minister consider taking steps to ensure that the skilled workers now apparently unemployed will be employed by other film companies outside Ardmore who come over and bring in foreign technicians while these technicians are unemployed ?

The workers involved are workers of which there is a general scarcity at the moment, and I do not think there is any danger of their not finding employment.

In the circumstances, would the Minister reconsider his decision not to set up a proper Irish film industry in view of the magnificent facilities available at Ardmore?

I do not think I ever made a positive decision not to set up a proper Irish film industry. If a reasonable prospect comes along, it will be considered.

Will the Minister indicate where the alternative employment is?

Builders all over the country are clamouring for skilled tradesmen. I see advertisements for them in the papers every day.
