Vol. 204 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Military Agreements in Europe.

3.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach whether an invitation has been received by Ireland to take part in any military agreement in Europe, including NATO; and, if so, from whom.

The answer is in the negative.

Will the Taoiseach state, in connection with the recent discussions he had with the President of the United States, whether the question of Irish bases was discussed as an alternative to bases in Europe which are available at the moment to the US under NATO agreements?

I have already told the Deputy there was no such discussion.

Is it not a fact that this country, according to the Taoiseach, is ideologically committed to the western side and is it not a fact that the Taoiseach and his Government during the past 18 years have been arguing on Ireland's inability to take part in NATO arrangements while Partition exists ?

Is the Deputy defecting altogether?

Now, doctor.
